The Book of Looks
Published in Paperback by Olympic Marketing Corporation (October, 1983)
Authors: Lorraine Johnson and Neil Greer
Average review score:

Fun if you love creating your own retro outfits
This is a fun book from the 1980s that lists a lot of different looks - from 1920s flapper to gypsy to catwoman - and then gives you detailed advice about clothing and makeup to achieve those looks. It's illustrated with fashion drawings rather than photos and it has a very 1980s feel. It's a fun book for young women who like experimenting with their look and have a taste for retro styles. (It might also be a good halloween costume resource.)

Books of American Negro Spirituals
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (July, 1940)
Authors: J.W. Johnson and J.R. Johnson
Average review score:

Outstanding transcriptions of traditional music
This book stays true to aural tradition and offers outstanding, non-Westernized arrangements of the aural traditional music of African American spirituals.

The choice of using phonetic spellings for the lyrics means that the lyrics are heavy in the use of words like "dese", "dose", "Heab'n", etc. However, given the original publication being in the 1920's, and the author's comments in the introduction, it is apparent that the spellings are not the result of gross cultural insensitivity.

The respect for, and love of this fine music comes through in the author's comments. And the transcriptions retain the strong harmonic features that are often "arranged out" of collections of aural traditional music.

It is a fine collection, and an absolute steal at the price.

The Books of the American Negro Spirituals

Authors: James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson
Average review score:

The Books of American Negro Spirituals
This is one of the best reference books available on the history of Negro Spirituals as well as a vast collection of songs - many of which have not been heard during our time. The preface begins with an awe inspiring poem " O Black and Unknown Bards". This is a must read for musicians, especially singers of Spirituals. Composers and arrangers would appreciate it's content as well.

The Borgias
Published in Hardcover by Holt Rinehart & Winston (May, 1984)
Authors: Marion Johnson and Georgina Masson
Average review score:

Colourful and interesting history
In this beautifully illustrated work, Johnson plots the dramatic rise of the Borgias from their roots in Spain to their occupation of the highest position in Renaissance society in Italy at a time when that country occupied centerstage in Europe, both politically and culturally. She explains why history has depicted the Borgias as fallen angels in a corrupt era, but considers the condemnation to have been too absolute and maintains that behind the gaudy horrors existed people of real talent and achievement, some of whom even possessed moderate virtues.
All of the Borgias were strong and colorful characters who caught the world's attention whatever they did. The crimes and sins of Rodrigo Borgia (Pope Alexander VI), his children Cesare and Lucrezia, and the legends of poisoning and incest that surrounded them, are here compellingly re-examined by Johnson.
There are maps and genealogical tables, a select bibliography and a detailed index, and the text is enhanced by beautiful black & white and full-colour illustrations. This is a thoroughly researched and well-written book, and I highly recommend it.

A Box of Trinkets
Published in Paperback by Premium Press America (September, 2002)
Authors: Allen, Jr Johnson and Jr. Allen Johnson
Average review score:

BE PREPARED TO BE UNPREPARED FOR THIS BOOK!
Allen Johnson Jr., a great teller of children's tales (see the PICKER MCCLIKKER books) also has much to say as an adult--and he says it in a fun and engaging manner! Johnson's pages are full of potato soup surprises, feisty army sergeants, inventive soldiers, luxury yacht voyages, train rides you wish you had taken yourself and an occasional slap on the wrist for all the silly things society tries to serve up without first being asked. This is like a really fun diary! Read with joy the exploits and thoughts of an unapologetic Southern writer who's been there and sometimes done that a few more times than you and I!

Boxing Day: The Fight That Changed the World
Published in Paperback by HarperCollinsPublishers Australia (November, 1999)
Author: Jeff Wells
Average review score:

Required reading.
As I am not a fan of this journalist, I must admit I was a bit prejudiced when it came to reading this book. Credit where credit is due though, this book is very good. It reveals an insight into the world as it was in the early part of the 20th Century and especially Australia, the scene of the Burns - Johnson World Heavyweight title fight in 1908. The author brings to light the personalities of these two boxers and how the public reacted to these personalities at varying times. Overall it is a well-balanced and entertaining read.

I laughed until I cried
It was one of the funniest books that I have ever read. After reading this book, I felt that I knew more about baseball than I did before. I thought the author knew a lot about kids and the way they play baseball when they are young.

Brazilian Cinema
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (December, 1988)
Authors: Randal Johnson and Robert Stam
Average review score:

A Fine Study of Brazilian Cinema
Johnson and Stam have compiled what is perhaps the definitive commentary on Brazilian cinema, offering thorough explications of the most important films from several different periods and styles. The book also discusses in detail tropicalism, anthropophagy, and other background elements that are integral to achieve an understanding of Brazilian cinema. Though some of the concepts may seem daunting, they are explained clearly and in a historical context, making it an excellent reference for students (either of Brazil or film in general). While some of the same articles appear in Cinema Novo X 5, Brazilian Cinema covers a wider range of subjects. If you are interested in Brazilian films, it is a must-read.
